FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What makes CostaSea sunscreen reef-safe?
CostaSea is formulated without oxybenzone and octinoxate — two chemical UV filters that research has linked to coral reef damage. Instead we use non-nano zinc oxide, a mineral filter that is gentler on marine life. That is what lets you protect your skin while leaving no trace on the reef.
What is the difference between mineral and chemical sunscreen?
Mineral (or physical) sunscreen uses minerals like zinc oxide that sit on top of your skin and reflect UV rays. Chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays using filters like oxybenzone. CostaSea is 100% mineral, made with non-nano zinc oxide.
Is mineral sunscreen better?
Mineral sunscreen starts protecting as soon as it is applied, tends to be gentler on sensitive skin, and — when it is free of oxybenzone and octinoxate like CostaSea — is friendlier to coral reefs. The best sunscreen is the one you will actually wear every day.
What does non-nano zinc oxide mean?
Non-nano means the zinc oxide particles are large enough that they are not absorbed into your skin or easily taken up by marine life. It is a key reason CostaSea is both skin-friendly and ocean-friendly.
Does CostaSea leave a white cast?
CostaSea is formulated to be lightweight and blends in with thorough rubbing. As with any mineral sunscreen, a temporary light tint can appear during application — work it in fully and it settles into the skin.
How do I apply CostaSea, and how often should I reapply?
Apply generously about 15 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply at least every 2 hours, and always after swimming, sweating, or towel drying.
Is CostaSea water-resistant?
Yes — CostaSea is water-resistant for up to 80 minutes. Reapply after swimming, sweating, or toweling off to stay protected.
What SPF is CostaSea, and what does broad-spectrum mean?
CostaSea is SPF 50 and broad-spectrum, meaning it protects against both UVA (aging) and UVB (burning) rays.
Is CostaSea safe for kids and the whole family?
CostaSea is family-friendly and gentle enough for all ages. For babies under 6 months, the FDA recommends keeping them out of direct sun and asking your pediatrician before applying any sunscreen.
Is CostaSea good for sensitive skin?
It is made with mineral zinc oxide and is free from parabens, sulfates, and synthetic fragrances — a formula designed to be gentle. If you have a specific skin condition, we recommend patch-testing first.
Is zinc oxide sunscreen safe?
Zinc oxide is one of the mineral UV filters recognized by the FDA as generally safe and effective for use in sunscreens, which is why it is a favorite for daily and sensitive-skin use.
What ingredients does CostaSea leave out?
We leave out oxybenzone, octinoxate, parabens, sulfates, and synthetic fragrances. CostaSea is also vegan and cruelty-free.
Where is CostaSea made?
CostaSea is proudly made in the USA.
